TVA chief addresses Bellfonte Nuclear Plant

SCOTTSBORO, AL (WAFF) -

The head of TVA in Jackson County discussed the latest on the Bellfonte Nuclear Plant Wednesday.
TVA President Tom Kilgore told a business group that the Bellfonte Plant is still a go, but that its completion should be viewed as a marathon not a sprint.
Kilgore was the guest speaker at Wednesday's rotary club meeting in Scottsboro. He discussed the strategy of TVA and said he believed nuclear power needed to be part of the mix.
Recently, it was announced that the Bellfonte Nuclear Plant was being put on the back burner as focus shifted to Watts Bar. Kilgore said they learned a lesson from their early years that you shouldn't work on too many projects at once, instead focus on one at a time.
The TVA chief said the economy was a driving factor.
"Until the economy recovers, right now, I've got more capacity than I need," said Kilgore. "If we were finished with Watts Bar, I'd still be here telling you we're going to have to plod for a while because the economy is not driving me to need more capacity right now."
Kilgore estimated the project will be completed between 2017 and 2019.
