San Onofre Shut Down May Cause Rolling Blackouts

The twin reactors at the troubled San Onofre nuclear power plant have been idled while investigators determine why tubing carrying radioactive water is eroding at an unusual rate. Gregory B. Jaczko, the chairman of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, will visit the plant Friday to highlight the agency's concern over the ailing equipment.

Just last week, the agency confirmed in a March 27 letter to Southern California Edison that the plant will stay shut down until the cause of January's radioactive steam leak is fully diagnosed and fixed.

Experts have warned the lengthy plant shutdown could lead to rolling power blackouts this summer.
