Nuclear reactor at Plant Vogtle going back online after Saturday shutdown

ATLANTA | The Southern Co. says that one of its two reactors at the Vogtle nuclear power plant in eastern Georgia will be operating again soon after a brief shutdown.

The Atlanta-based company said in a news release Sunday that Unit 1 was temporarily taken down at about 1:30 EDT Saturday because of an "issue with a water pump."

No radiation was released. The news release says "Southern Nuclear is investigating the issue, and the unit is currently safe, stable and secure."

Southern spokesman Mark Sullivan said Sunday evening that crews were putting safety first but "close to having the unit back on-line."

The plant's Unit 2 has continued full operations.

Southern received federal approval this year to build and operate two new reactors at its Plant Vogtle site south of Augusta.
