Panel OKs renewal for Energy Northwest power plant

By the Tri-City Herald

The Advisory Committee on Reactor Safeguards voted Friday in Maryland to recommend license renewal for the nuclear power plant near Richland, according to Energy Northwest.

It was the final step before the Nuclear Regulatory Commission makes a decision, which could come in late May.

The advisory committee reviewed the NRC's final safety evaluation report, which concluded that Energy Northwest had satisfied all safety-related issues raised related to renewing the license to operate the Columbia Generating Station.

The plant now has a 40-year license, and the requested renewal would extend it for 20 years, allowing it to operate until 2043.
