Spain May Extend Garona Nuclear Plant's Life Until 2019

The Spanish government is considering extending the life span of nuclear plant Santa Maria de Garona until 2019.

The country's Industry Ministry has requested the Spanish nuclear sector regulator, the National Security Council, to determine the terms and conditions over the possibility of modifying an order that set July 6, 2013 as the shutdown date of the Garona's nuclear facility and therefore consider extending the useful life of the plant by an additional six years from its planned close date.

In 2009, the government issued an order to close Garona in July 2013 against the opinion of the National Security Council.

Garona, located in Burgos, in northern Spain, is the smallest one in the country with 460 megawatts of installed capacity. The plant is owned 50/50 by Spanish electricity companies Iberdrola SA (IBE.MC) and Endesa SA, a unit of Italy's Enel SpA (ENEL.MI).
