FULTON, Mo. -- The Nuclear Regulatory Commission is holding public meetings in Fulton on Ameren Missouri's request to renew its license for the state's only nuclear power plant for 20 years.

The St. Louis-based utility submitted its license renewal application for the Callaway nuclear plant late last year. The federal agency is taking public comments as it begins an environmental review of the request.

The meetings are scheduled Wednesday from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at Fulton City Hall. NRC officials will also be available for informal discussions starting one hour before each meeting.

Ameren's current 40-year operating license for the Callaway County plant expires in 2024. Wednesday's hearing is not related to Ameren's plans to build a second nuclear power plant in Missouri.
